"From dust you came, to dust you will return."
That's the essence of Ash Wednesday. It's reminding people that life here on earth is not permanent. Soon this will come to an end. We are made from dust and we will return to that form in God's perfect time. At the end of it all, what is really important is not what we are but who we are.
Ash Wednesday also reminds us that Jesus changed the symbol of the cross from disgrace to grace. Before, the cross is revered as the symbol of punishment and shame. With Jesus' death, it became a symbol of salvation.
