On April 18, Vanessa said she was at a bar when she received a text message from Jones. He joined her there with three other women. Jones invited her to a Makati hotel and told her that the friends they were with a few nights before would be joining them. They chatted for a while.
When Vanessa made a move to leave, saying his girlfriend might not like it if she sees her there, Jones got mad and slapped her on the face. She said he threw her on the bed and raped her. He held her neck while he repeatedly slapped her, she said.
Vanessa said she was only able to leave after she threatened to “break the television with the remote control.”
I am compassionate to the rape victims. But not to liars. What frightens me now is the fact that just anybody can accuse you of anything especially a heinous crime and make a statement to the media but without the intention of filing a case. How come she's not interested in obtaining justice? If all she wants is personal healing, does she consider it healing to wash her dirty linen in public? Just how believable is her recount?
Vanessa said she was only able to leave after she threatened to “break the television with the remote control.” I personally don't believe the threat is viable to a beast with the intention to ravish you. He certainly won't care even when a dozen televisions are broken.
Neither do I believe that Lance Corporal Daniel Smith's acquittal discourages victims from filing rape raps. What it discourages is the filing of malicious rape cases to tarnish a person's credibility.
I want to commend Associate Justice Monina Arevalo-Zenarosa of the CA’s special 11th division for drafting one sensible ponencia acquitting Smith:
“What we see was the unfolding of a spontaneous, unplanned romantic episode with both parties carried away by their passions and stirred up by the urgency of the moment caused probably by alcoholic drinks they took...”
